More information can be found at http://www.road.com/corp/services/services.html.
What is Pocket Edition with Forms and Two-Way Messaging?
Pocket Edition Forms and Two-Way Messaging adds the Messaging and Forms functionality to Pocket Edition, and adds some usability enhancements. The enhancements include:
- The ability for the account administrator to see if Pocket Edition users are logged in or out;
- The ability to see if the battery is low or is active and freshly charged again; and
- A tool in the application preventing multiple users from logging in as the same user.
If I’m already a Pocket Edition subscriber and I want to add the usability enhancements above, what do I do?
Current Pocket Edition customers may upgrade to Pocket Edition 1.1 at no charge by downloading via Nextel® MAM site, de-installing the existing version of Pocket Edition, and choosing the updated version by selecting “New Subscriptions” from the phone menu.
If you wish to add the Forms and Two-Way Messaging option to your Pocket Edition subscription, simply contact your @Road Sales person or our Inside Sales team at 1-877-7AtRoad.
Which carriers are this solution compatible with currently?
Pocket Edition is only compatible with Nextel at this time. We will introduce a Nextel Partners-compatible service shortly. Before this time, for sales opportunities within the Nextel Partners footprint please contact Greg Brott at 510-870-1239.
Which phones are authorized for use with the Pocket Edition?
Authorized handsets include the Motorola® i88s, i58sr and i730 GPS-enabled handsets combined with a Nextel Total ConnectTM data plan.
What size Nextel Total Connect plan is recommended?
We anticipate many users will transfer less than a megabyte (1 MB) of data per month. In July 2003, Nextel had two plans able to fill this need. The Nextel Total Connect As-You-Go plan and a Nextel Total Connect 1 MB Public IP data rate plan can be purchased with and includes 1 MB of data and a public IP address. Both offer enough data usage for most @Road Pocket Edition users.
Additional information on current Nextel rates and charges can be found at http://www.nextel.com/services/nextelonline/total_connect.shtml.
Are there other fees related to this service?
Customers must utilize Nextel’s Mobile Application Manager (MAM) to download the application to their handset. More information regarding current rates and charges can be found at http://www.nextel.com/services/javaapps/mobile_app_manager.shtml.
Where can customers purchase GPS-enabled Nextel phones and Total Connect plans?
Customers can purchase from any authorized Nextel representative.
What is required to activate the Nextel Mobile Application Manager (MAM) and Pocket Edition?
- Complete and sign both the @Road and Nextel service agreements.

- Assign a license to each phone using the Nextel MAM Web site: http://www.nextel.com/services/javaapps/mobile_app_manager.shtml.

Customer Administrators may distribute these numbers in any sequence, using any preferred means of communication. This process is further outlined in the Pocket Edition Manual.

- The Customer Administrator confirms the assigned serial number and PIN for each phone by entering the assigned number into the appropriate phone. This process is further defined in the Pocket Edition Manual.
A confirmation message on the phone indicates a successful completion. For more detailed instruction, please refer to the Pocket Edition manual.

What are the differences between Pocket Edition and GeoManager?
Pocket Edition utilizes a GPS Java Phone to collect and transmit data to the @Road servers. There is no hardware that must be “hard-installed”. GeoManager uses an iLM® Internet Location Manager that is vehicle-installed to collect and transmit data. GeoManager also offers a broader feature-set and a variety of other services that are not currently available with Pocket Edition. Both Pocket Edition and GeoManager offer incredible mobility and workforce management solution tools – for different audiences and types of users.
What options are available to customers who want enhanced functionality of Pocket Edition?
The following enhanced optional service features are available for Pocket Edition customers at the same published rates as GeoManager:
- More frequent updates
- Account Grouping
- Extended Data Storage
Can customers have one account that includes both Pocket Edition and GeoManager units?
Yes, a single account with one login and password is available.
Will an account with Pocket Edition and GeoManager units have the same user interface?
Yes, for Pocket Edition there will be no changes to the user interface.
Is there an upgrade path for Pocket Edition customers?
For those customers that require more vehicle-centric capability or messaging, there is an upgrade path via the iLM 2710.
Does @Road have a function where mobile-user data is not collected during specific times (i.e. weekends, evenings, etc.)?
At this time, @Road does not have the capability to limit the transmission of data at specific times. In other words, when the application is running on the handset, @Road is collecting and processing that data for presentation on a customer’s account. Customers may empower their employees to disable the application during specific time-periods.
How long is Pocket Edition data stored in GeoManager?
The length of time that data is stored in the application for Pocket Edition is 14 days. Longer data storage is available for an additional fee.
Does Pocket Edition Forms and Two-Way Messaging support Exceptions, Driver Logs or State Mileage Report?
Pocket Edition does not support Exceptions or Driver Logs in this release. Pocket Edition customers may subscribe to the State Mileage Report, with the knowledge that the report calculates and displays mileage by state only when the application on the phone is running. Miles traveled when the application is not running are not captured in the report.
What documentation is available that may answer more technical questions?
The @Road Pocket Edition Manual outlines usage and technical requirements along with guidance for initializing the Pocket Edition solution. Additionally, the Pocket Edition Manual outlines how to access features and product functionality of the Pocket Edition solution. |
